Creation Care for Small Groups

Some of the best Bible Studies and curricula (for small group or personal study), ordered by favoritism.

A group I work with, Young Evangelicals for Climate Action, wrote a six-week Bible Study on creation care that I really like. It pulls from Genesis, the Gospel of John, the Psalms, Colossians, and Revelation.

The Mennonite Creation Care Network, one of my favorite denominational offices for this work, pulled together a robust 12-week curriculum called Every Creature Singing. It’s broad-ranging, with units on the Bible and theology, peace and justice, and Christian simple living.

The Lutheran Church (ELCA) published a thorough five-session curriculum called “Awakening to God’s Call to Earthkeeping.” They included plenty of resources and made the program accessible to non-experts, so anyone who wants to can lead a study.

Interfaith Power and Light is one of the largest network of religious organizations focused on sustainability. They published a five-session study for churches called “It’s God’s World.” IPL also recruited the famous environmentalist Bill McKibben to make a shorter, interfaith three-week program called “The Cry of Creation.” His opening sermon on Job 38 called “The Comforting Whirlwind” is a classic.

The United Methodist Church’s council of bishops published a Call to Hope and Action on creation care and its related issues of human well-being. Their accompanying six-week small group study called God’s Renewed Creation would be great for more hesitant churches in the UMC or similar traditions.
