Evolution
As Christians, I believe we ought to learn as much as possible about creation since it reveals the character of the Creator. If we believe God made the world, should we not love the world and explore what science can tell us about it? An old commercial from the Discovery Channel demonstrates this well:
I’d also point out that Darwin himself hints at this view of science revealing a grandeur of God in creation:
“There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed by the Creator into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.”
Charles Darwin, closing paragraph from On The Origin of the Species
Alongside climate change, evolution is the topic that gets raised most when people hear that I have a scientific and religious background. Although climate change is of course a more urgent issue, evolution hits at the heart of important questions of creation, personhood, and the nature of God. It’s important for Christians to use the brains God gave us to interpret both science and scripture faithfully. I encourage you to learn more at the links below.
The scientific field of evolution has been well-established for decades - covering everything from genetics to bacteria - and is the basis for almost all of modern life science and medicine. Have a look for yourself.
I personally found the stories of Rachel Held Evans, Francis Collins, and Tim Keller helpful and convicting when navigating evolution and Genesis for myself, and I recommend them to all.
